Creating truly successful athletic facilities requires more than plopping down an aesthetically ambitious stadium enticing fans and sponsors alike (although that certainly doesn’t hurt). At Perkins+Will, our Sports + Recreation practice spans a host of scales and takes a more nuanced approach. From community recreation facilities to world-class professional sports campuses, our designs aren’t simply in the service of the game. When we create buildings for sports, we consider the holistic wellness of the athletes and users, from training to playing to rehabilitation.
With that in mind, enjoy a tour of four recent or upcoming sports-related facilities that celebrate the spirit of the athlete and sports fan in all of us.
David Braley Athletic + Recreation Centre, Mohawk College
On a slightly different scale, this facility for Mohawk College required our designers to create an inclusive athletic environment that embraced a wider spectrum of program and uses. In response, the gym, change rooms, and fitness facilities embrace flexibility (both programmatically and, well, physically).
Blue Star | Baylor Scott & White Sports Therapy and Research Center
What happens before and after the big game? In North Texas, we’re helping create a new destination for athletic training and sports medicine: a 300,000 square foot sports performance, research, and wellness center adjacent to the Dallas Cowboys’ new world headquarters. It is a first-of-its-kind collaboration between the Cowboys and Baylor Scott & White Health, expected to serve up to 50,000 visitors annually.
National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Headquarters, Lobby Branding
How do you communicate the experience being an athlete? The NCAA selected Perkins+Will’s Branded Environments team to transform their headquarters with the development of a cohesive campus experience and brand expression for members, staff, and the visiting public. Key objectives of the project included the embodiment of the NCAA’s mission and culture; reflection of the relationship with members to champion student success; celebration of the “One Team, One Future” initiative; and communication of student-athlete in academics, athletics, and life.
University of Massachusetts Amherst, Football Performance Center and Press Box
As one of the most visible sites on the UMass Amherst campus, our Boston office took this opportunity to reimagine the spirit and character of the existing stadium and surrounding landscape. The new facilities create a vibrant hub for campus life and intercollegiate athletics, housing a Hall of Fame open to the public in addition to locker rooms, strength and conditioning rooms, and sports medicine facilities.
