It’s winter in Toronto, where the York Recreation Centre has become a warm and exciting hub for people using a wide range of programs. We’re excited to share a video featuring some of those users. Their stories encapsulate the spirit of our approach, which began by simply listening to residents of the three neighborhoods, long disconnected and underserved, that the facility supports. The ensuing project transformed some leftover land by a ravine into a vital new destination.
Whenever I’m lucky enough to complete a project like this, I like returning to it, to witness how design empowers community life. Our work here continues, even though it’s built, with direct observation of how the spaces are being used.
